Uncover the secrets behind designs that truly matter to people from companies like Apple!
1. Think Different
We all have a special day per year, our birthday!
Today, 29th September is actually my Birthday. : )
We want to be unique individuals,
and as creators, we want our work to be recognized.
To do so, we have to find a way to differenciate from the crowd.
Like what Apple’s motto says: “Think Different”.
Or “Do not follow the mass and think out of the box to innovate”!
However, remember that:
Yes, we want to be different.
But while it is easy to create something different,
it takes work to create something relevant.
In other words, something that matters to people.
While the market used to be covered by boring IBM computer, Apple came up with colorful Machintoch!
At that time it was a like “rainbow in the middle of a black and white world”.
It was super disruptive at that time.
Since, Apple keep attracting more and more raving fans.
2. Don’t create “Weird things”. It’s easy/lazy.
To create something different and attract attention, you can create something weird.
It is easy or probably lazy.
We all saw on Tik-Tok some “weirdo” artists creating weirdo art.
That is cool, sometimes.
But, do you want to be a “weirdo creator” who creates things no one understands or has no real use?
Or do you want to create things that improve people’s life?
When you create a product, ask yourself:
- What is the purpose?
- How can I help people?
Don’t get me wrong.
I am not saying you can’t create weirdo things as a Designers.
You can if it make sense to the users.
Example:
Creating sweets for Kids.
The more weirdo sweets are, the more exciting the experience will probably be!
3. Create both useful and emotional products
As a designer,
we create things that are both useful and emotionally meaningful to the users.
While an artist takes inspiration from his inner world,
the designer takes his inspiration from the Users’ world.
He understands people’s needs, then, creates for them.
I have been a fan of Apple’s era of f Steve Jobs and Jony Ive.
Their mission of innovative technology at the service of users made Apple successful worldwide.
Their creative journey is truly inspiring for any designer.
Hear Jony Ive talking about Apple’s products.
You can feel the love for its users and products in his voice.
He’s called the Genius Behind Apple’s greatest products.
As the lead designer, he’s genuinely the best marketing representative of Apple.
(Nowadays, Apple under Tim Cook is more like “Think Predictably”. )
4. Love People to create meaningful products
Technology is not the number one source of innovation. People are.
No matter how technological or expensive a product is, if nobody can relate to it, it is a fail.
Remember, technology is a tool.
Love people, and you will create products that people will love.
Ask yourself How to better serve them.
The French Designer Philippe Starck said:
Create as you do for your sisters, mothers, or family members.
You create for people who matter to you.
So you will make quality products that have a positive impact on the world. : )
Create with intention and love for others.
That is how I knew I do not want to be an Artist, but a Designer.
How about you?
What leads you to become a Designer?
Cheers,
Chou-Tac
PS: I just came from my favorite restaurant called “Tomatito”, the fun Tapas bar.
It is our favourite tapas place! And their chef knows how to create flavours people love!
